her dreams give her wings This was a pivotal moment in Starshine’s life. A moment to be cherished for an eternity. School dances didn’t matter to most people, but Star wasn’t exactly most people. Most boys didn’t some to school in skirts and dresses. Most grade eight boys went to grade eight prom in a tuxedo or suit, while Starshine had showed up in a floor length dress that outshined most of the girls’ dresses. Star had been turned away for showing up in a dress and ended up spending the night crying into Spark’s arms and watching The Notebook for the hundredth time. Star hadn’t expected people to be so harsh about her choices. She hadn’t expected to get turned away for wearing a dress. Maybe for being Roma, that happened a lot and Star learned not to care about that, but not for wearing dresses and other girly clothes. So far AMG had been really accepting of her choices, most people didn’t even know the difference between Star and ant other female student. Jane was giving Stat what her old school wouldn’t let her have, and for that she was grateful. Grateful and over the moon.
She was putting the finishing touches on her attire, elaborately decorated and feeling very proud of herself. Her weapons of choice was a strapless teal dress with a jeweled waist, which she had a thin little gold chain decorating and a peacock brooch pinned into a small fake flower. Her shoes were purple peacock feathered heels, fingers painted glittery teal with an array of wrings and her delicate wrists having several bracelets on each. Pearls and a peacock necklace with a peacock headband mixed in with her golden curls and all that was left was her make up. But that was simple and easy for a seasoned expert like Star. Other than getting dressed up and having Darius as her date Star didn’t really know what to expect from this. What was going to be done. Were they just going to stay in the dorm and put on music? She wasn’t really sure, but it didn’t really matter to her. She was getting her first school dance and that was what mattered.
“All ready, sweetie?” |
she spoke as she came out of the bathroom and back to the rest of the dorm, dropping her make up pallets onto her desk with the rest of them. Star’s voice was already rather soft and feminine, but a little help from Star’s power and the Adam’s apple that gave her a more masculine sound could be gone. Breasts a bit on the smaller side, a much softer voice, man bits all tucked in, looking as lovely as ever. “Let me do your hair!” Star didn’t even care if it was already done, she just wanted to play with Jane’s luscious locks. So thick and healthy and gorgeous. [/div]

words: 480 tag: jane/dare/aiden notes: tada

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #d96a70 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and if it's neverland you need Jane, all her life, had been so used to doing nice things for Avery or for Shane or for Jerry or Tracy. Since her dad died, the four of them had encompassed her whole being, and, along with school, keeping them happy had been her main purpose in life. And when that had become too hard, she nearly broke in two.
But now that she as at AMG and had begun to make friends, she had new things to spend her energy on. And tonight was all about Star. Jane was writhing with excitement. She had spent three hours the night before baking cupcakes and other things, which were currently laid out on a table in the small room. The decorations that she had managed to scrounge up in a week had been meticulously put up--pink, purple, and yellow streamers on every wall; green and pink balloons because she could find neither yellow nor purple; a make shift disco ball made of red Solo cups and Christmas lights; and fairy lights everywhere. She had Jerry to thank for both the disco ball and the fairy lights. She had to admit, though, the room looked pretty great for a four-person dance. It would be crowded, sure, but they had managed, by pushing both beds to the side, to find enough room for a reasonably sized "dance floor".
All dressed and ready to go, Jane admired the room with her hands on her hips. She was pretty proud of her little set-up. In the corner of the room sat her laptop, which was opened to her newly filled-to-the-brim iTunes that would be the source of music for tonight. She was a little worried that everyone might not like the music she had picked out. She was also worried about Shane missing this, but it was about Star tonight. Things like that didn't matter as much, as long as Star was happy.
And she sure seemed like it when she bounced out of the bathroom. She nodded her head at Star's question, and happily walked over at her request to play with her hair. Before doing so, though, she grabbed her dry-erase board and her purple marker to write, "You look fantastic, as usual. Tonight's going to be great. I even have a super special surprise for you." It was hard to squeeze it all in, but she managed it.
Hidden underneath one of the beds was a Burger King crowns (what, Jane's on a budget?) decorated with glitter glue, and a tin-foil scepter. The plan was to get one of the boys to announce Star as Prom Queen at some point during the night. Jane had thought of it just the day before and fell completely in love with the idea. She was going to make this Eight Grade Prom entirely perfect for her roommate.

It seemed to be a whole lot fancier than the one he honestly remembered attending- Jane had gone with him and picked out and actual tux and vest and all that to match Star (Dare's date)'s dress. When Dare had attended his real eighth grade prom, he had worn, like most of the other dudes, black jeans and one of those fake tuxedo shirts. But hey, we're focusing on making Star happy, so it's all good. A few days after picking out his tux and one night before the dance was supposed to take place, Dare received the following text from Jane: "Hi! So I have like a Prom Queen crown thing for Star but I can't announce it because lol so if you could do that for me, I would be forever grateful. " Dare had replied easily, and the text made him smile more than a little bit. Star was really nice, and she seriously deserved tonight. Now, it's nice to keep in mind that Dare doesn't know why exactly Star didn't get to go to her real eighth grade prom, and that's a good thing, because Sapphy isn't quite sure how Dare would feel about her whole gender identity schtick. Hmm. Perhaps we can play with this later. Moving forward. It had taken Dare a good half hour to properly get his tux on, trying to wrinkle it as little as possible. He stepped out of his dorm, fly as hell, saying a quick goodbye to Vence. He strutted down the hall to Jane and Star's dorm, and knocked on the door. He had with him a corsage for his date, because you just have to do it right. It was purple orchids with a silver bracelet, and he had a matching orchid stuck in his jacket lapel. Dare stood patiently until he was let into the room-er, dance floor. All things considered, the room looked pretty spiffy. Bright colors were everywhere, and Dare soaked it all in. It rocked. "The room looks awesome, Jane, Star." Smile as big as ever, Dare walked over and gave Star the corsage, putting it on her wrist. "I figured I should do this right, right? Corsage and all the rest." He smiled sweetly at the blonde in her peacock outfit and secretly worried about the orchids not matching. Whatever. They were pretty, okay? And Dare was kind of dopey sometimes, alright? Besides, the flowers were grown in a small orchid farm in New York that sold some of the best flowers in the state. The ribbon was produced in an American factory in the midwest, and- Dare tried to clear his thoughts. Jane hadn't let him wear his gloves, because they didn't go, and it was "tacky" according to her. He would just have to be sure to not touch too many things tonight. Or people. Hmm. Might make dancing difficult. Then again, as long as he just didn't touch skin, he'd be fine. Yeah, he'd be fine. is this the real life ?
Aiden was actually excited. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this pumped about something. Living in an orphanage all his life, he didn't get everything all other teenager's lived for. Partying was out of the question. Most of the other kids living in the facility were the most boring people he had ever met. Nonetheless, he still wished for some kind of social life. And, here at this school, it looked like he might get just that.
The boy's dorm was already decorated to his liking. It wasn't too hard to imagine someone like Aiden running around his room, plastering whatever he felt necessary to the walls. Which was exactly what he did. Each wall was completely overloaded with pieces of his artwork or awesome things he had picked up at garage sales or thrift stores. He had a passion for all things thrifty, and his room was filled with them. Why, the month before he got here, he had picked up the most amazing little painting that was probably one of the most abstract things anyone would ever see. But he loved it, and payed the four pounds that it was priced at gladly. Running his eyes around his crowded, chaotic room, a smile graced his face. This dorm was like his sanctuary.
Turning, he faced the little mirror that was super-glued to the inside of his closet door and stared at himself. He surveyed his appearance, from his hair to his feet. Undeniably, it was weird seeing himself without his usual beanie that he always sported. Now, his head was bare, which was odd. His clothes were not too fancy, to say the least. But Aiden had always hated getting dressed up too much. Besides, this was about as fancy as his wardrobe got. He owned no tux and, quite frankly, didn't have the money to go out and rent one. The thought crossed his mind once or twice that he may be under dressed, but what could a guy do? Deciding he looked presentable, Aiden picked up the little corsage he had made himself. whatadork. He had simply found the prettiest blue rose he could and tied a dark green ribbon around it to match the leaves that he had left sticking out from the bottom of the rose. Creativity for the win. The color the pretty flower was was the exact shade of his tie, which, he hoped, was the same color blue as Jane's dress. The corsage was a very simple one, though he wished desperately that she would like it.
He crossed his room in a couple long strides, checking his dorm room over and shutting the lightswitch to the off position. Closing the door behind him, he started off on his little walk to the co-ed dorms, which weren't too far from his own. Too be honest, the boy didn't know what to expect when he would enter the room. And he could feel his palms begin to sweat as he tapped lightly on the door, and was let in. The general splendor of the room made him feel even more under dressed, but he didn't want to show it. It looked very nice, better than he had thought, actually. Self-consciousness aside, he was even more excited as he observed the dorm-turned-dance-floor. He flashed a smile at the three people who were already inside. So, he was the last to arrive. Wooo. Once again, he pushed his thoughts aside and focused his attention on his friends, namely, Jane and Star. He was pretty sure Dare hadn't helped with this. "Hey. This place looks great!" He was so obviously in a good mood, one of his best. His words were filled with genuine happiness, and his face shone with an excited glow.
His eyes landed on Jane, then, and the grin that graced his face widened. "You look pretty," he told her, almost shyly, his accent thickening with his emotion. He padded over to her and presented her with the simple corsage he brought, obviously less glamorous than the one Dare had just given Star, but it was still pretty, right? He desperately hoped that she would think so as he tied it gently around her wrist. Seeing as he was this close to her, he noticed the little flag necklace that she sported, and a little chuckle parted his lips. "I like your necklace," he observed aloud, bringing a finger up to touch the edge of the flag, but then dropped his hand quickly with a slight flush of his cheeks.

her dreams give her wings Star wasn’t quite sure when the dates were supposed to arrive so she was trying her best not to make too much of a mess of Jane’s hair, simply teasing it with her fingers to give it a bit more volume. Star needed something to do with her hands until the boys showed up. She was far too nervous to be able to just sit still and behave like a good little prom goer. Star peeked over Jane’s shoulder a bit to red the dry erase board so she could read it better. “A super special surprise?” |
She sounded a bit more concerned than excited, but when you were the oldest of nine kids “super special surprises” didn’t usually end up being the puppy that you were hoping for. Just as Star was considering weaving something into Jane’s hair there was a knock at the dorm door and her heart almost skipped a beat with excitement. It raced and for a second Star simply stood and stared at the door as if it might open so long as she kept staring. And then she finally took her hands from Jane’s luscious locks to open the door. Darius first, looking incredibly handsome. [color-cc0066] “Dare! You look good, really handsome.” She actually had to remind herself not to swoon or get too carried away and just stepped aside to let him in. “This—” Star gestured to the decorations that littered the room. “Is all Jane’s handiwork. I really just sat there and looked pretty.” It was more of a joke than conceitedness. Star honestly wasn’t as conceited as she often came across. She thought that she was attractive but not any more so than the next person. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? There was another knock on the door and Star once again opened it to let Aiden in. “Aiden! Come in, come in. Whatever fragrance you have on smells really good.” The door was shut behind him and she spun back around to focus on Darius and the corsage he got for her. She honestly wasn’t expecting him to go along with it this much. She wasn’t expecting a corsage or even this nice of a suit. “This is…This is beautiful, Dare, thank you.” She held her delicate little wrist out and let him slip the corsage on, admiring the purple orchids that didn’t quite match but were beautiful and perfect none the less. Star gave a quick glance at Aiden and Jane, figuring it was best to leave those two to their greetings for now. “You look very dashing.” She had a hand on Dare’s shoulder, sliding it down a bit in the manner that someone used to constant physical contact would do. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #d96a70 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and if it's neverland you need Jane didn't like Star's tone of voice when she asked about the surprise. It wasn't a very good sign. She was sure she wouldn't hate it when she got it, but there was always a chance. She frowned a little, but she didn't get a chance to ruin everything by just telling Star about the crowns, because Dare came in and distracted them both. She was beginning, now, to have some doubts about everything. What if Star didn't like the Prom Queen thing? God, what if she thought they were making fun of her or something? God, everything could go wrong so easily all of a sudden.
Calm down, Jane. Everything's going to be okay. ...Maybe I should see a therapist about this whole talking-to-myself-in-my-head-all-the-time thing. Everyone else does that, too, right? Why am I so weird? Gah. It'll be okay. You'll be fine. Nothing bad will happen. Please, let nothing bad happen.
It wasn't long before Aiden showed up and her worry melted away. Or, rather, she was able to push it down and ignore it for a little while. She would just have to enjoy the moment and if something bad happened she would deal with it then.
Jane was positively wriggling with excitement. Both the boys were here, and both had commented on the directions. She flashed a smile and gave a tiny curtsy to show her gratitude for their praise. She was just glad that they didn't think it was too tacky or anything. She also noticed how she and Aiden were pretty under-dressed compared to the other half of the party. It didn't bother her so much as she thought it was fitting.
Her smile almost tore her face in half when she saw the corsage that Dare had gotten for Star, and Star's reaction. She was so happy that this all seemed to be turning out so well.
Her attention, however, was quickly captivated by Aiden. She beamed at him, glad to see him in a good mood. In response to his compliment, she pointed at him, then put circles around her her eyes with her fingers, and finger-spelled "great". She hoped it would get across that she was telling him that he looked great. She probably looked a little goofy, but it was better than having her dry-erase board be in the way, all awkward and whatnot.
She completely forgot about looking silly when she saw his hand-made corsage, holding her hand out for him to put it on. She signed, "Thank you," then wrapped her arms around him in a hug that might have been just a little bit over-enthusiastic. She felt like she was on a major sugar high or something. It was terrific.
When she pulled away and he commented on her necklace, she smiled more shyly than before and her cheeks colored bright pink. She grabbed her board again to write, "Do you, really? I was hoping you would." She almost asked if it were weird, but she didn't want to make everything awkward.
