Let the cuteness begin! Come to us... The boy shook his head, so small it was almost unseen, trying with desperation to rid himself of the dead voices. They always sounded so... dead. Well, duh. Okay, what he means is they sound so depressing. Like they are having no fun being dead, whatsoever. And why would they? They're dead for Pete's sake.
Now, off the subject of death for a bit. He sat down at one of the many tables. And the only free one that was left. The courtyard appeared to be a popular place to eat, when it was nice outside. And, lemme tell you, it was nice. The sun was shining down with awesome intensity, but there was the slightest cool breeze, that permitted the air to get too warm. It was the perfect day, in his opinion.
All thoughts of dead things forgotten, Aiden unwrapped the lunch he had just bought from the little store. He had purchased a small chicken sandwich and an apple. He never had really eaten much, contrary to the whole "guys are bottomless pits" thing. He just had never been too hungry.
With a slight smile, the brown-haired boy glanced around the courtyard. He didn't know too many people at this school yet, and none of his small group of friends seemed to be here. Oh great, here's to another lunch all alone. Heaving a sigh, he picked up a styrofoam cup and took a sip of the iced tea that he had also bought, along with his lunch. (Yes, he liked tea. He grew up in the UK, who doesn't like tea there? ;)
Quite frankly, he liked this school well enough. The people seemed cool. At least, most of them did. The teachers hated him (what's new?). And the grounds were pretty. Prettier than any other school he had been to. Although, the people who ran this school probably wanted as few complaints from the students as possible. It's a school for freaks, after all. And if word got out about it, the school and all the kids in it would be tourist attractions.
Oh, Aiiidddennn. Oh, Lordy, now they're doing that creepy echo thing. You know, the special effect they have in horror movies when the evil guy is calling for the victim? Yeah, that kind of echo.
He took a bit of the sandwich he bought, trying desperately to distract himself from the dead things. Searching the courtyard again, he searched for any kind of familiar face that would deter his mind from thinking about death.

She had a turkey wrap in one hand and a bottle of water in the other as she made her way to the courtyard. She wasn't normally a health nut, but today was a gorgeous day outside and she didn't want to do anything that could potentially ruin it. When the weather was good, Jane was in high spirits. And today was one of those days.
Nothing particularly good had happened, really. She had just woken up on the right side of the bed, she supposed. That, and it was fantastically warm outside and she didn't have to worry about bringing a jacket.
It wasn't often that Jane was in such bright spirits. She, normally, would have brought dark clouds or rain with her. Which is why she was often found eating in the library when she could get away with it, or the cafeteria when she absolutely had to. She hated her power. It sucked. But she couldn't think about that, or else there would really be clouds around.
At least, she wouldn't have to worry about running to get one as long as nothing ruined her day.
The heat and the sun seemed to become even more pleasant when Jane spotted her friend Aiden sitting at a table all by his lonesome. Her lips widened into a grin and she practically skipped over to sit with him. She set her food down and gave him her biggest smile. After setting her stuff down, she made sure to pull the dry-erase board out of her bag and a purple marker. "Hi, Aiden!" she wrote on it. "How're you doing? Hope you're having as great a day as I am."
Although Jane was sweet and sometimes funny, she didn't have very many friends. It took a lot of effort to get to know her and it was just a little bit weird that she carried a dry-erase board everywhere. But she adored the few people who put up with her with all of her heart. They meant the world to her and she would do just about anything for all of them. Her heart was three times too big and it showed.
She erased her board because she had run out of room. "Anything exciting happen?" Part of Jane wanted to go dancing, and the other part of her wanted to climb a mountain. She was just full to the brim with energy and had nowhere to expend it. Except for, of course, on poor unsuspecting Aiden.

:) <3 He had just taken another bite of the chicken sandwich when he spotted Jane from across the courtyard. It took him some energy, but he eventually did resist the urge to stand and wave his arms wildly to get her attention, and to show her that she should come sit by him. He soon found there was no need for this little show he had been about to create. And no doubt, it probably would have attracted quite a bit of attention, but he didn't really care. Screw the other people. Anyway, she saw him before he even got the chance to make a scene, and he felt the air around him grow warmer. So, this was the reason for the good weather. He should've guessed.
The boy managed to swallow what he had bitten off before Jane got to his table, so that when he smiled at her she wouldn't be flashed by a bit of 'sea-food.' The food-free grin widened considerably when she pulled out her dry-erase board. And he could relate, really. Why, even at this very moment, he had his tiny, worn sketch-pad shoved in his back pocket, which was filled with drawings he had done at the spur of the moment.
He could feel the good day he had been having get better. See, his teachers had had the humaneness to actually not give him a bucket-load of homework, which he wouldn't have done anyway. But the people earned a tiny bit of his respect back when they didn't overload his bookbag with papers. Just a tiny, mind you. And they lost it the minute they assigned another fifty chapters of the latest hundred and fifty chapter novel they were reading or something of the like.
He watched her hand as it traced out words on her board in a pretty, legible script. He liked it when people had nice handwriting. It irritated him to no end when he watched people who couldn't give a rat's arse about whether or not others could read what they wrote. If you go to the trouble of writing something out, wouldn't you want it to be legible?
"Hey, Jane!" He responded with obvious enthusiasm, his heavily Irish accented voice alive with happiness. "I'm pretty great!" Too be honest, Aiden didn't talk much when he was around people he didn't know. And when he did, he showed no emotion. Boring ol' monotone. But when he was talking with someone he knew well? Out came outgoing Aiden.
Exciting? Not particularly. Well, except... "I got kicked out of one of my classes." The boy was clearly amused at the situation. He was troublesome, yes, and he absolutely loved causing mischief, but most of the teachers came to accept that. "Oh, Aiden," they'd say with that condescending shake of their head. But this teacher had actually gotten mad when he had made a little humming scheme with his fellow classmates. Here's how it went:
Before the teacher actually got into the classroom, the boy had gathered the class in a sort of huddle, and explained that, while the teachers back was turned, one student was to start humming. When the teacher whipped around to see WHO DARED DISTURB MY CLASSROOM, the person would stop humming, and another would start. After a good five minutes of this, the teacher demanded that whoever the mastermind of this was to step forward, or everyone was getting an F for their semester grade. All fingers pointed at Aiden. Ungrateful little twerps.
He flashed Jane another wide, ear-to-ear grin. "What about yourself?"

A bubbly feeling started in the pit of her tummy, and she took a bite out of her turkey wrap. One upside to not talking? You don't have to worry about talking with your mouth full. The turkey wrap was heaven, all wrapped up in green cellophane. She especially enjoyed the guacamole. Jane had always loved guacamole.
Jane felt his eyes on her as she wrote, but it didn't make her feel self-conscious. Aiden was one of her best few friends. It was very hard for Jane to feel uncomfortable around him, she found. He radiated Comfort Zone for her. That, and her bare shoulders were singing with joy at the touch of the sun. She wriggled a little bit in her seat to get more comfortable, but she was just a tad wired, and couldn't keep still for very long.
She sipped on her drink, then erased the board wit her hand, her tongue stuck out in concentration. Really, it was just a bad habit of hers. She had a sore in the right corner of her mouth because she had made it so chapped by sticking her tongue out all the time. She wrote, "That's good to hear."
Just a few moments later, however, Jane's eyebrows shot up and her giddiness boiled down just a little. She might be called a nag on occasion, and it isn't like she never broke the rules, but she hated for others to be proud of getting in trouble. Sometimes it was just carefree fun, but other times . . . Well, Jane just likes to worry a lot, really. It isn't so much the pride as it is the potential consequences. She doesn't want bad things to happen to her friends. (Who does?) She flashed him a stern look, though, that clearly said, What have you been doing and how are you going to pay for it?
His grin, though, was infectious, and in no time she was smiling again. Aiden reminded Jane a little bit of how her brother used to be before he got all . . . weird. It was pleasant, though she was still worried about him being in trouble.
At his next question, Jane had to put down her wrap so she could answer him again. By now, it was nearly half gone. "Really great, actually. For no real reason at all. It's weird." She underlined the word, "weird". She wasn't going to complain about how well today was going, of course, but that didn't mean she had to understand why it was going so smoothly.
She leaned back a little, hanging onto the edge of her seat and looking up at the horizon, her gaze falling just above the tops of the heads of the students in front of her. She grinned a goofy grin, because she felt a little bit like she was floating on top of the whole student body instead of rolling around beneath its feet, being stamped on as usual. She righted herself and moved her eyes back to Aiden, dropping the goofiness in her smile. She wished she could sign at him and he would understand. It was weird, having friends who weren't Shane and didn't know sign language. It should be taught in all schools. A mandatory subject. It's not even that hard to learn, really.

omg sorry this took so long
His day was instantly getting better. Alongside the arrival of Jane came a better mood, and a distraction from the dead things. For both he was thankful, but he was most happy for the presence of his friend. She always seemed to brighten a room - or, at least, whatever room he was in at the moment. For example, the courtyard that was full of hormonal teenagers seemed a lot less like what it actually was. He felt he could tolerate the group of girls sitting at a table adjacent to the one Jane and yours truly vacated who were talking about some teacher's washboard abs or something of the like. Not that he was interested, or anything. Before Jane had gotten here, the silence was filled with "ohmygod, did you see his butt?!" and it was hard not to overhear. But, now, she filled the silence, which was kind of ironic, if you think about it, seeing as she didn't actually talk..
No matter how much he tried, he couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped from his lips as he watched her tongue appear out of her mouth as she concentrated on her writing. In his mind, that was simply adorable. No other word for it. And then she flashed him that look that made him laugh even harder. "Don't worry, I'll be fine." He told her, obviously amused by her emotion. And then she smiled at him, and was it just him or did this day just get so much better?
Once again, he watched her hand trace out the next words, and smiled at the words before realizing that he should be smiling at Jane. So, he raised his gaze to hers. "That's awesome," he said in reply to her words, "I wondered what the reason was for all this sunshine." With his own words, he winked lightly at her, and then watched as her gaze drifted to the sky. In turn, he looked up, too, basking in the sunlight happily.
We are always here, Aiden. Cue the creepy voices. Right on time. They always seemed to turn up when he was at his happiest, dragging him back into a brooding quietness. He tried desperately to hide the fact that his mood had just fallen a little, and the only telltale sign was that his smile faded just slightly and his posture hardened, not so relaxed. Nonetheless, he would still say this was one of the best days he had had in a very long time. Sunshine and good company. What could beat that?

"Are you laughing at me?" she scribbled as quickly as she could manage onto her board. "It's not cool to laugh at people." Her hand was beginning to ache a bit, and she wished she didn't have this barrier of communication. With some people, it was easy. They did all the talking and she just had to sit back and listen until the very end. Everyone in her family except for Vanessa knew sign language, too, so that was easy.
But normal people were a hassle. She wished everyone knew sign language. A lot of kids at the Montessori did, because of Miss Belle, but most weren't nearly fluent enough. She supposed she would just have to suck it up. It was her choice in the end.
Besides, it was much easier to forget about the pain in her hand just from the look on Aiden's face. She loved seeing him so happy. Anyone, really, but she couldn't keep her own smile off of her face. Not that she minded.
I wondered what the reason was for all of this sunshine.
Sometimes, Jane really loved her power. The sun felt good on her face. She wondered if it was sunny everywhere else on the island, too, or if it was just this part of the courtyard. A part of her hoped she could spread the sunshine to everyone, but another part of her wanted to keep it all to herself. After all, it did feel glorious.
Jane's eyes slid back down to Aiden, but her smile was gone. She didn't know if he was upset, really, but he wasn't in quite the same mood that he had been just a few moments ago. She tilted her head to the side for a minute and considered questioning him, but in her experience, people usually denied that there was anything wrong or they got even more upset than before. She figured that if it got bad enough she would be able to tell, and then she could try to help.
"Anything exciting happen lately?" she wrote down, hoping that she could at least distract him from whatever it was that had changed his mood. That, and the conversation was sort of lacking. She felt a little bit like it was her fault. She hadn't had much experience with having to talk to people before going to this school.

once again it took me so very long x.x
Are you laughing at me? Her indignant question made him want to burst into another little fit of laughter, but, with her next statement, he pursed his lips, trying as hard as possible not to chuckle again. "You're right. It's not," he replied, feigning extreme seriousness. Taking another small bite of the sandwich he still held, Aiden's mind wandered slightly. He had never been able to get out of his habit of sinking into deep thought in the middle of talking with someone, no matter how hard he tried. And this time he was thinking of the amount of homework he had accumulated. He wasn't exactly a "Let's do this!" kinda guy. He was more "Let's put this off until the last possible minute!" As you can probably imagine, that did not go over very well, but, hey, at least he actually does the stuff.
His thoughts returned to the girl sitting beside him, along with his peripheral vision, and the smallest of smiles graced his face. She had noticed his, uhmm... mood decline? and was attempting to distract him. He turned his head only slightly so he could grin at her, hoping he would show some kind of appreciation. "Not really. Same ol' same ol'." Quite frankly, nothing was boring at this school. His old school the orphanage provided was about as exciting as watching the grass grow, while everything here was different. 'Different' has just become the usual. "And yourself? Have you experienced any life-changing events recently?" He teased, a smirk playing on his lips.
Poor Aiden had never been very good at conversing with people. He was more of a listener, which was unfortunate, seeing as how he could only talk with Jane when she was writing on a whiteboard or something. It must get tiring, writing away all day. And his old school never required any kind of sign language classes, so he was dead there. Actually, he didn't even remember there being a ASL class... Watching Jane, he wondered briefly if it was hard to learn, and if maybe she would mind teaching him, but he shook the thought away, too shy to ask.

"Don't you seem sincere," she wrote. After that, though, she put her board down because she seemed to remember her food. Jane had always been big on baking, not much of a cook, and even less of an eater. It wasn't a ply to be skinny or anything, because, if anything, she could use a few extra pounds.
Whatever. She was hungry today. One of the cool things about not talking was being able to 'talk' with your mouth full and not gross out everyone within a five mile radius. Of course, it was kind of hard to eat and write at the same time sometimes, especially depending on what she was eating.
She switched gears back to Aiden, became worried, as she always does, but smiled when he seemed okay. Maybe she had just been overreacting. Besides, she was really enjoying spending lunch with him. She grabbed her board again and wrote, "Well, I did almost get caught out five minutes past curfew last night. I'm on a rebellious streak." What had really happened was that she had been cleaning up her mess in the dorm's kitchen and took a little bit too long. She was sure she heard someone coming down the hall way just after she made it to her room, but it was probably just her paranoid imagination.
"That counts as life-changing, right?" she added, before resuming the consumption of her food. In all her life, nothing exciting had ever really happened to Jane. Not since her dad died, and that wasn't a positive sort of excitement. Her life may not have been conventional, but it was very plain.
You know, apart from being able to effect the weather and going to a school full of amazing kids with super powers. But that was just a plus.
