FIFTEEN. DEAF. FRUSTRATED. HOMO-AFFECTIONATE DEMISEXUAL. SINGLE.
[classy=appdesc]Oh, hey Paradise! Look who's it is! It's Timothy Alan Sommers! Oh, uh... perhaps you know them by their nickname, Alan? Anyway, this certain blessing in disguise came to us on August 9, and grew up to be a hefty 5’10”. You can always tell it's Timothy because of their dark brown hair, brown eyes and darker skin. Not to mention they've gotten themselves a tattoo! You know, everyone says they look like Avan Jogia? I personally don't see it though ....

[classy=app1]THE BASICS
Timothy goes by Alan. Not Timothy, not Tim, not Timmy, just Alan. He’s fifteen and a sophomore. He’s been deaf since birth due to a complication during his mother’s pregnancy. However, over time he’s become adept at reading lips and recognizing vibrations, so he’s not completely lost during conversation. He can talk, technically, but he doesn’t because he doesn’t know how it sounds when he speaks, so he doesn’t feel comfortable doing it.
Alan is attracted to men, but he isn’t interested in sex or anything unless he believes he’ll be with the person forever. He’s never reached that level of connection with anyone before. Usually he’s rather comfortable with being alone, but he has days where all he wants is to be hopelessly in love.
Alan has frequently had issues with anger, but usually it’s aimed at the world, rather than a person or group of people. He hates that he was born deaf and he hates how he’s grown up and while he’s not always bitter about it, he does have bouts of irrational fury.
He goes barefoot as often as possible, since it helps him to feel vibrations in the ground.
THE POWER
Alan is omni-lingual, meaning he can easily read, write, understand, or speak any language he comes in contact with. However, this is frustrating for him, as he can’t hear and has to depend on reading lips and feeling vibrations in order to have a clue what’s going on. He likes to read other languages, though, as it comes so easily to him.
He found that he could do this when he was about four, shortly after he had learned to read English. His mother frequently listened to music of other languages, but as he couldn’t ever listen to music to appreciate it, he would go out of his way to read the lyrics. When he realized they weren’t in English, he was slightly discouraged, but tried to read them anyway and found that it was just as easy to understand as English was to him.
After that, he was encouraged to try to speak in other languages, which he is actually quite decent at, but he doesn’t like it because he can’t hear his own voice.
As an extension of his power as well as out of necessity, he knows sign language, but he doesn’t use it to communicate because he thinks it’s stupid. He’d rather write.
THE BACKGROUND
Neither Alan nor his mother, Allyssa know who is father is, as his mother is kind of a total slut. She has nine children and as far as she knows, none of them have the same father. She knows who some of their dads are, but not all of them. Alan was right in the middle. He has two older brothers and two older sisters, as well as two younger brothers and two younger sister. Allyssa doesn’t care much for any of her children. Three of the oldest ones ran away together when Alan was eight, with the oldest girl staying to help take care of the five youngest. None of the kids get on very well.
When Allyssa was pregnant with Alan, she was mugged while walking home from work one night. This caused damage to her unborn son, which is why he is deaf. It may also have some connection to his anger problems, but this isn’t certain.
Alan is typically regarded as his mother’s favorite child, though he doesn’t believe this is so. He receives more attention, as he is special, but the attention doesn’t typically come from her. When Allyssa saw the potential in her son to make her rich as some sort of genius child, she started sending him to professionals, who gave him texts in many different languages and asked him to read them. He was even able to decode some dead languages that had taken experienced personnel years to understand. This made him something of a celebrity, which he did not appreciate at all. He began to refuse to cooperate with the people anymore, so he fell from the spotlight and went back to being a nobody.
As he grew up, his inability to hear and thus speak began to bother him more and more. What was the point in being able to understand language if he couldn’t hear or speak it? He hated that the world could let this happen, and he started getting angsty and rebellious. He was arrested for being a public nuisance when he was thirteen and was in a correctional facility for a few weeks, but he didn’t really change. He sometimes gets violent when he’s angry, so it’s just best to stay away.
When he reached high school age, AMG snatched him right up. He already had his name in government records, and they decided that while his power wasn’t technically dangerous, he as a person could be, so he was placed on the island for a careful watch.
This is his second year in the facility, as he is now a sophomore. He doesn’t keep in contact with his family and stays during breaks.
THE FUTURE
Alan really does not aspire to do much. He really wants to be able to hear, so a surgery or something is a real big hope. He isn’t sure that what’s wrong with him is curable, though. He’s always on the lookout at school, trying to see if maybe there is someone who can fix him. He also wants to find out who his father is, even if he never meets him.
THE HOBBIES
He reads a lot. Like, anything he can get his hands on. He likes music with really powerful bass, since he can feel it. He also sometimes writes poetry and experiments with language, trying to find words that rhyme in more than one language.
THE MISCELLANEOUS
Typically, when looking at someone, he focuses on their lips so he can catch anything they say to him. It sometimes gets awkward for the person he’s with, as he doesn’t blink all that much so it’s sort of an intense stare all the time. He doesn’t try to make things uncomfortable, but it is anyway.
He has a tattoo of several music notes behind his right ear. He finds it humorous in the ironic sort of way. It’s like the music is just out of reach for him. Almost there, but not quite.
