I'M THE NEW CANCER •• N E V E R • L O O K E D • B E T T E R •• A N D Y O U C A N ' T S T A N D I T- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Zack sat leaning against the outside wall of the Student Hub, tearing grass out by the handful and smoking like there was no tomorrow. He supposed he wasn't really supposed to be smoking on campus, but he also supposed that he frankly didn't give a shit. Presently he was waiting for Crystal, who seemed to be taking her dear sweet time to get there, so he decided to amuse himself by building mountains of grass and cigarette butts. There were probably infinitely many things that he could be doing instead, but most of them involved waiting for Cryss inside the Hub and it was probably better if he kept the smoking outside.
He was tempted to set a small stack on fire for the hell of it, trusting that he could use his powers to put the fire out by simply turning it into water or something, but extinguishing fires with themselves is a good way to get burnt so he opted out of that and instead focused on making the grass mountain as flipping fantastic as it could possibly be.
Considering it was a mountain made of grass and cigarettes, it wasn't that great. He was just really fucking bored.
He spent a while watching the people people that were arriving. Some of them looked completely lost, while others seemed rather confident. He wondered if he was this transparent. It was his first day here, but he could hardly believe that he looked that confused and desperate. The secret to not looking out of place was never to have somewhere in mind to go.
On campus, for example, one shouldn't worry about trying to find their room, because then they just look scared when they aren't there yet. The trick is to look around and take everything in, because then in the future they'll know where everything is, and not just the room they searched so hard for. Zack had only been here for a few hours, but he already felt pretty confident navigating around the campus. Maybe some of it was a skill in learning the layout of a place, or maybe he just paid better attention. Whichever, he was glad he just didn't look as clueless as the rest of them.
As he finished his third cigarette, he started feeling rather impatient. He hoped she was just busy doing other things and not busy being disoriented like the rest of the student body.
He started on a fourth, digging the remains of the last one into the top of the stack of grass. It smoldered a bit, but didn't catch fire, so he eventually decided he'd just go ahead and light the damned thing, because fire is cool and Cryss was taking too long to be amused by tearing up the lawn.
Zack had cleared a decent patch, so he was relatively safe from setting the entire campus lawn on fire. It was contained to the mountain, at least for now. He left it burn, watching its smoke meet that which he exhaled in increments, and they swirled up to the sky together until they couldn't be seen anymore.
Something about the whole situation was peaceful, though. He was alone and had nothing to do but sit and smoke. Cryss or no Cryss, he could live with this. It would be simpler if this was how it could always be. He didn't want to have to progress forward. He didn't want to aim for a job or a future. It was all pointless, after all. No matter how you live, eventually you die, just like everyone else.
Why, then, shouldn't his life just be this wall, this small fire, and these cigarettes?

She was agitated about it, and was starting to think that she would never make it there. It had been several days since Cryss had last seen Zack, and it was driving her insane. She couldn't imagine what had made her thought that she would be okay to go an entire year without him, but now that she was finally going to be reunited with her best friend, it seemed like everyone wanted to talk to her. She started to become a little bit frantic until she finally caught sight of the skinny boy, sitting over a smoking pile of earth. She could just hear the crackling of the tiny flames. She stopped in front of him, a foot or two away from the fire and tilted her head to the side, giving him a calm little smile. "You start that all by yourself, Baby? Look at you, growin' on up without me even there to see it." She waited for him to extinguish the fire and get up so she could give him a tight bear hug. It had been way too long since she had heard his heart beat and smelt the familiar Zack scent underneath the muck of his cigarettes. She closed her eyes for a moment to savor it all. "I missed you a whole lot," she said, still clinging to his shirt. Cryss had found that she didn't really feel herself without Zack around. There was no one to tell about her sexual frustration (or to relieve it), or to talk to about how stressed out these classes were making her, or to curl up around when she was upset. She had particularly missed having someone to call when she had a meltdown. She didn't have a roommate yet, which she supposed was a good thing, but the loneliness didn't really help the case. Zack meant the world to her, and missing him was a pain she didn't want to experience ever again. "I was starting to think that I would have to find a replacement for you. You sure as hell took long enough to get your stupid skinny butt here," she complained, finally letting go of him. Of course, Cryss couldn't even fathom finding someone to replace Zack. It would take years of gaining her trust and fighting through her bull shit to even begin to take his place. And as long as he lived, she couldn't say that she wanted anyone but him. "I did find a few sexytime friends, actually. I think you're going to have to find a way to get back into my good graces before they take your spot." Cryss wasn't naive enough to think that Zack was really pathetic enough to only have sex with her, but as long as he wasn't talking about it, she could pretend, and it was always fun to hold that over his head. There were so many questions that Cryss wanted to ask Zack, but she decided that they could all wait. She just wanted to be with him for right now. Questions would just complicate things. [/classy]

I'M THE NEW CANCER •• N E V E R • L O O K E D • B E T T E R •• A N D Y O U C A N ' T S T A N D I T- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As irritated as he might have been at her untimeliness, or how peaceful he'd felt when he had let himself relax, he felt everything change when he finally saw Crystal again. A few days shouldn't have seemed so long without her, but after the years they'd spent together, time apart seemed to be endless. Seeing her again made all the negative things he'd been thinking just moments ago dissolve, fade away into the sky like the smoke from the fire. He thought he was crazy for thinking them; why be alone when he could be with Cryss?
The trickiest part about putting a fire out was not the physical action of doing it, but reaching the mindset to put one's hand directly on the source of the flame. He'd done this enough times that it didn't take as long as it once had, but it really isn't easy, especially since he knew it would hurt, if only for a little.
He covered the burning stack with his palm and felt it sting for a few moments before it became cold and wet. Shaking the pain out of his hand, he stood up and hugged Cryssy, holding the last of his current cigarette out to the side to avoid burning her or covering her in the smoke. He knew she did things worse than smoke cigarettes, but that didn't mean that he felt it okay to make her carry the smell everywhere.
"I miss you, too,"
he said, glad she wasn't letting go yet. He really did miss her. It was like that cliche of being alone in a crowd. He loved her desperately. Not as a lover, really. He loved her like the best friend she was. He loved her because she took care of him and let him take care of her. And, if he was completely honest, the sex was a contributing factor, too. He missed her smell and her feel and her taste. It made him wonder how they'd ever lived apart before, when now they could hardly spend a few days apart. Standing there, breathing her in, he decided that this was where everything should stay. With Cryss. She let go first, complaining that he'd taken too long to get to the school. "I think we're even, considering how long you took to meet me here. Honestly, woman. I was starting to believe that you'd forgotten me and were off having adventures without your best friend." He took another draw of the cigarette, finishing it and flicking the filter behind him, then breathed the smoke out to the side to avoid getting her in the face. Then she brought up her new "friends." He rolled his eyes at the idea. "Cryssy. Think about it for a moment. Do you really think there's anyone out there that can do like me? I'm one of a kind. Replacing me would be like trying to replace the sun." Another thing he liked about being with Crystal was that she didn't care when he got all conceited and talked up himself, even when it got to the point of extreme exaggeration. Though he'd never admit it, he really hated when Cryss talked about sleeping with other people. He teased her about it to deal with it. It wasn't so much the act that he didn't like, it was more the talking about it. The bragging. The pride in the action. It wasn't like he didn't do the same thing, messing around with other people. But he didn't bring it up. "So how are you? Like. In general. God, I hate not seeing you every day. Is it lame of me to say that?" Even if it was, he couldn't say he took it back. It was hard to find anything positive that didn't include Zack. Even if he wasn't there, she had probably been thinking about him. She wondered if she would have loved him as hard as she does if they hadn't been in each other's lives the way that they were. She consoled herself with the reflection that most people found it more difficult to be around someone, no matter how much they loved them, for extended periods of time. It wasn't like she and Zack never fought, but it was actually a very rare occurrence. She had to stop thinking about it, because the positives and negatives of their relationship created a very blurry line and it was beginning to give her a migraine. She had learned a long time ago to just knit the facts together and let things be, but sometimes her mind still went on a tornado-like rampage. All of the things she had missed about Zack started compiling themselves in her head. She missed his eyes, and she missed his voice. She especially missed the differences between Zack when he was interacting with her and Zack when he was interacting with other people. It might make her seem selfish, but the way he treated her differently from everyone else was the thing she loved the most about Zack. She was sure she was the same way with him. It wouldn't be fair if she wasn't. She also really missed the sex. It wasn't that he was extremely good at sex, but they were both very good at it with each other since they'd had so much practice. She just couldn't get that kind of synchronization with anyone else. Crystal was actually a little bit offended by Zack talking about her being late. She was here now, wasn't she? Besides, she was agitated at herself as it was. "It wasn't my fault," she pouted. "People kept wanting to talk to me. I think I pissed a lot of people off, actually, because I was trying to get to you so I was just like, 'Yeah, cool, whatever, go away please,' instead of talking to everyone like I usually do. Look what you do to me, Zack." Now that she was thinking about it, Cryss was actually a little bit upset. She couldn't remember, but she really hoped she hadn't offended anyone important. And by important, she meant someone that she could have sex with later on, or that she thought was worthy of her time. Cryss new Zack was right, but she was not about to admit that, no sir. Instead, she put her hand on her hip and pursed her lips together. "You're pretty cocky for someone who's sex life is in danger." She tried not to think about how untrue and unclever that statement was. She knew that Zack was hot and could get anyone he wanted. And probably would if she wasn't putting out. That didn't, thankfully, make Cryss desperate to have sex with him. She was desperate to be in bed with him for other, totally unrelated reasons. She brightened up when he asked if he was being lame, letting out the most genuine laugh she had laughed since leaving him at home. She moved to slip her arm around his waist and lean her head against him. "Only if it's lame of me to admit that I called my mom every morning just to make sure you weren't dead yet. But I'm good. I kind of like it here. I don't feel so paranoid that someone's going to freak out on me all the time, but at the same time it scares me. It can't be that easy to control a bunch of dangerous supernatural teenagers. Oh! And I was serious about making friends. Most of the kids here are really cool." Cryss didn't like how she sounded like a child, but it didn't bother her very much since she knew Zack wasn't going to judge her for it.

"Well, aren't you just Ms. Popularity today. It's okay, though. I forgive your lateness, provided that you will forgive me for smelling like an ashtray. I'm was bored, if you couldn't tell by the lack of grass over there,"
he said, gesturing down to where he was sitting. "I made a mountain and then I burned it." The patch of bare ground looked sort of pathetic compared to the lush lawn that surrounded it. The little burned pieces that scattered as he put out the flame only made it look even sadder. "It was a really slow twenty-five minutes, waiting for you." When she threatened his sex life, he just scoffed. "I'm gonna go back to the sun analogy and say you couldn't quit me any more than you could keep the sun from coming up every morning. It can't be done, Cryssy. You're stuck with me." It wasn't like he didn't sleep with practically everyone else. He wasn't particularly worried. He laughed again when she talked about calling home for him. "Why didn't you ever ask her to put me on the phone? I would've liked to talk to you. I missed you and stuff." As she brought up the students again, he shrugged. "The ones I've talked to seem cool. I think I'll like being here. Anywhere I don't have to deal with my family is good." It had been a long time since the authorities had officially decided that the family Zack had grown up with were dead, but he still sometimes acted like they were still out there. It was a habit he'd gotten into when trying to prove his innocence in the matter, and he still sometimes said things like that around Cryss. While he hadn't ever told her, he was fairly certain that she knew him well enough to know that he knew something that no one else did about the situation. What that was, he didn't know. It didn't matter. She wouldn't turn him in, no matter what she suspected. "I wish we were in the same grade, though," he mused. "It would be nice to have classes together. I'l miss you during the day. Why do you have to be younger than me?" Zack complained. "You should go see if anyone around here has the ability to age you a year or so." He didn't like the idea of it, but he'd be graduating after this year and then Cryss would be here without him, doing God knows what with God knows who. He tried not to be overbearing, but as her best friend and number one fuck buddy, he did sort of feel a sense of protectiveness over her. He didn't want her getting hurt if he wasn't there to help. Crystal could fight her own battles, he knew, but he wanted to have her back, too. It was complicated. [/div] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -• B E C A U S E Y O U S A Y S O •UNDER YOUR BREATH 482 WORDS | COMPLETE | TAGS: Crack! "Just today? I don't think so. I'm Ms. Popularity every day of my life." Cryss really did have a lot of friends. It wasn't because she was extremely charismatic, likable, or charming. She was easy enough to get along with, but she just really loved to talk to people. She supposed that the extra practice with talking and making jokes and being witty and flirting and whatnot made it easier for her to make friends over time. She had no idea how she snagged Zack. He was really the only person she still talked to that she knew when she was younger. She wasn't very good at keeping friends over the years because her personality was constantly changing. She frowned for a moment at the mention of how long she had taken. She really did feel bad. Those were a lot of minutes without Zack that she would never get back. She felt a little bit lame for feeling that way, but her life had revolved around him for so long and there never seemed to be any minutes with him that weren't fantastic. "I'm sorry about that. I really am. If I could have been faster I would have." She glanced back at the burnt patch of grass, feeling a little bad for all of the poor living grass that Zack had had to burn, and then feeling really stupid for thinking about that. Cryss raised an eyebrow. "Am not. I could get anyoneone I wanted. And I do." She would keep arguing as long as Zack did, but Cryss was eager to move onto the next subject. Their sex life with other people, when discussed verbally, was a bit of a sensitive subject. "Because talking to you would have made me miss you more," she admitted. Cryss was beginning to not like all this gushy BABY I MISSED YOU talk. She and Zack were cheesy, sure, but this honesty about her feelings all at once were a little disconcerting. She didn't respond to his comment about his family. His bringing that up really confused her sometimes. She used to think that he meant her mom, which she could understand since her mom was a raging alcoholic who just happened to like to beat and belittle her sometimes, but that didn't really make since. The definition of what exactly counted as a family for Zack was unclear. As much as she hated hers, Crystal at least knew who she belonged to. Zack didn't have that luxury. The fact almost made her appreciate her mom more. Almost. Besides, her grandmother was really cool. She didn't think Zack had any really positive familial experiences. She at least had a redeeming factor somewhere. But they had a sort of unspoken agreement where she just went on a let-it-be policy in regards to his family. Cryss shrugged. "It doesn't bother me that much. I can just drop out next year. Save myself a lot of pain." She wrinkled her nose at the age comment. "I like myself young, thanks." Cryss was borderline terrified of turning eighteen. She didn't want to be an adult, and being one officially was a potential stress trigger. Cryss didn't really understand why Zack was so upset about it. It's not like she would be going to school forever. And, anyway, if she did end up staying, they could survive a few years with just phone calls, couldn't they? She sure hoped so. They wouldn't just stop talking. Although, it would be weird sleeping with people if she wasn't sleeping with Zack, too. That probably didn't make sense but there was something in her head blocking the rightness of that. [/classy]

"I mean more so than usual. But whatever. Anyone around seem promising?" he asked. She had a few days' advantage in the friend making department. The fact that she was actually somewhat likable and could talk to people also helped. Zack had never been good at the whole interpersonal communications thing. He usually blamed it on his home life growing up, but it could just be the fact that he really fucking hated most people because they were ignorant pricks and he didn't want to be around them. It was easier by far, then, to just take what he wanted from people and move on with his life. That probably wasn't the most promising way to prepare for the future, but it was pointless to worry about. As much as he didn't like the idea of the future, he certainly spent a lot of time thinking about how things would be different. I'll stop smoking then. I'll learn to talk to people. I'll stop sleeping around. He didn't particularly want any of those things to happen now, though. It would happen eventually. But not now. He decided to drop the discussion about her being late, deciding he didn't have any other witty remarks to counter her with. And he let go of the sex with other people thing because he knew neither of them were particularly happy with the subject. Zack shrugged off her comment about missing him more if they talked on the phone. It was starting to get weird being all EMOTIONS and stuff, so he just let it go. "Why do you wanna drop out so bad? I mean. If I can do it, you can do it. Honestly." He supposed it was a little unfair to say things like that, since he was shit-sure that if he had as much inheritance as she would that he would never be at a place like this. He'd probably just live in a decent house and pay all his expenses off interest from the bank and just sit back and let life happen. "So, d'you wanna go inside or anything, or are we just gonna hang out here?" he asked. "I mean. I was really only out here so I could smoke without forcing lung cancer upon everyone around." He wasn't completely sure what the Student Hub was about. From what he understood, though, it was mostly there to make up for the fact that the kids were trapped on the island all the time and never got to do anything. The one building hardly seemed like a good exchange for the rest of the world. That said, he hadn't really been impressed with the world, either. "I hear there's an arcade in there, if you're any good at arcade games," he offered dumbly. "I haven't actually seen it, but yanno." Zack pulled his lighter out of his pocket and twirled it around in his fingers. He needed to do something with his hands, and usually his go-to was a cigarette, but he didn't particularly like doing that around Cryss, since he often got on her case for smoking this or drinking that and it didn't seem right for him to go ahead and give in to his vice while bitching about hers. [style=margin-top: -16px; background-color:#f5f5f5; font-family: trebuchet ms; font-size:10px; line-height: 9px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; width: 400px; height: 300px; padding: 5px; color:#585858; filter: alpha(opacity=50); -moz-opacity: .50; opacity:.50;] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -• B E C A U S E Y O U S A Y S O •UNDER YOUR BREATH 554 WORDS | COMPLETE | TAGS: Crack! Everything had gone by in a blur, despite her constant misery of missing Zack. "Well, everyone I've met so far seems pretty decent. I haven't talked to anyone enough to be able to pick out the really cool ones, though." Mostly, Cryss didn't want to go into details about people she hardly knew. That, and she barely remembered everyone she had talked to, much less their names. Later, she would have to start taking careful inventory of her friends, though. And enemies and fuck buddies. Cryss liked to know where she stood with people. One of the worst feelings in the world was finding out that someone you thought you were friends with wasn't really your friend. Or just, to find out that someone didn't think of you the way you thought they did. She liked to be sure about things, and she liked people to be honest with her. Sometimes it made her a little weird and paranoid, but better safe than sorry. A huge part of their conversation had been dropped. The I-love-you-I-miss-you thing had been nice for the first ten seconds, but it was beginning to get a little stuffy. Cryss and Zack's relationship was very complicated. She would say she thought of him as a brother, but they had sex and were really physical in public on occasion. For most people, that would equate to a boyfriend-girlfriend sort of relationship, but ever since she could remember there had been this line that they just could not cross. She couldn't say she minded very much. Relationships weren't usually her thing, and she was pretty sure she didn't love anyone that way. It still hurt to think about it. She shrugged when he asked her about dropping out. "Because it's much more important to me to be having fun. I'm only here now so I can learn to control this shit, and to be with you. By the end of the year, I won't have any of that keeping me here, you know? So why not drop out? It's not a matter of whether or not I can do it, but whether or not I'm happy doing it." What she really should have told him was that she hated the idea of being away from him for two whole years. She knew that it would suffocate her and AMG would become more of a prison than a home, and she liked the way it felt now. She wanted to leave it while it was still that place for her. Cryssy glanced at the door to the hub. She hadn't been in there more than twice yet, and both times it was only very brief. There were a lot of people inside, which meant a lot of noise and she didn't feel like being distracted right now. "How about we go for a walk, instead? It's usually really crowded in there. We can check it out later." She offered a smile, but it melted when she saw him playing with his lighter. He couldn't be much more obvious, and she hated, just a little bit, that she was stopping him from lighting up. But you can't be upset about something you can't see, right? She dislodged herself from him and started off in a random direction, her back to him. She stuffed her hands in the pockets of her shorts after flipping her sunglasses down over her eyes and leaned back as she walked. It was hot and sunny out today. She didn't care if she got a thousand new freckles. She loved this weather. And though teen!Cryss will never admit it both writers know that she also loves Zack more than anything ever so ha/[/classy]

"So where are we gonna go after this year, then?" Maybe he was a little out of line to assume it was going to be a 'we' situation, but he didn't like to think that it could be otherwise. It had always been the two of them. He wouldn't know what to do if she just left.
He thought it was stupid sometimes, how clingy he was. It was hypocritical all by itself, too, considering how much he got around. But even so, there was always a part of him that was terrified by the possibility of being replaced or forgotten or left behind or something.
But thinking like that was actually starting to annoy him, so he let it go. The weird attachment thing was not a good part of him.
"A walk would be cool, yeah. I don't feel like dealing with people," he said.
He shoved his lighter back in his pocket after noticing how it bothered her, which he didn't really understand. He didn't want her doing drugs or any of that shit, so he wasn't going to do it in front of her. It was just manners, really. Or something.
After they'd walked in silence for a bit, he figured it'd be appropriate to start a conversation again.
"So, do you have a roommate yet?" he asked. "What room are you, anyway? I'm in 52."

Cryss hadn't thought about that. She knew, though, with utmost certainty that she would not be in school and that, wherever she was, she would be with Zack. Maybe she would have stopped drinking, sleeping around as much. Maybe she would be clean. Maybe she would be a totally different person. She had no idea what was coming in the next hour, much less the next year. So she just shrugged. "I guess we'll find out."Crystal fluffed up her hair and added some bounce to her walk. She suddenly had a bunch of energy that she didn't know what to do with. Maybe turn cart wheels or run a mile or climb a mountain. She didn't know yet. She'd think of something. "You know, it's weird," she said, ignoring his comment. "A lot of these kids are really messed up, from what I've seen. They're all sex addicts and drink and party and do drugs and stuff. It's supposed to be really really easy to get pot here. I wonder if it's the powers. You know, the stress of it all? It wasn't like this at our old school. There were fucked up people, I mean, but they weren't all like this. You had to dig deep to find the baddies. It's bizarre."She reached her arms over her head and stopped walking to stretch them out, then resumed with her bouncing. She had no idea where she was going. She saw trees in the distance, though, so she assumed they would end up in the forested area. "Yeah, I do. Her name is Andrea. She's cute. I'm in 20. Do you have a roomie?" She wished desperately that she would have been able to room with Zack, but she was sure that the moment any staff member discovered that they were touchy-feely at all. Plus, her mother refused to sign the co-ed dorm permission slip because she thought Cryss was a, "Filthy fucking whore."She glanced back at Zack, just to see his face. She hoped they both died young. That sounds stupid and selfish, but she wanted to remember the way he looked now. She loved Zack's face. It was strange, she had to admit, but it was the most positive thing in her life. It always had been. Especially on the rare occasion that he smiled. [/classy]

Zack wasn't sure how to respond to her comment about the future. Finding out was easily the most logical response. After all, he hardly knew where he was going the next day, but it was impossible to say what he'd do after graduating. He didn't feel motivated to do anything. In elementary school, teachers had always asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He knew what he wanted, then. A doctor,
he told them. Or a lawyer. He could remember saying a firefighter at one time, as a touch of irony after the incident with his family. Now that it actually mattered, though, he was completely clueless. He wanted to live in a society where nothing was expected. It'd be easier if he could just live life and not do anything. "I suppose we will," he said quietly. He was relieved when she changed the subject to something that was less... feelings-y. "In other words, I'll fit right in, yeah?" he joked. He didn't consider himself to be that fucked up, but he had some issues. Most of them involved the fact that he'd killed an old lady and her family, but whatever. They hadn't been nice to him, either. They deserved it. And then there was the whole sleeping-around-all-the-time thing. But that was mostly just being a teenager, he figured. That and boredom and poverty. When everything out there is so bloody expensive, you might as well stay in and enjoy yourself. "Yeah, I do. His name's weird. Gare or Gage or something like that. Gage, I think. He seems pretty cool," he said simply. "I only met him briefly." He could see the kid being cool. There could definitely be worse people to room with, he was sure. It would've been even better if he was allowed to room with Cryss, but while Cryss's mom had offered to sign his permission form for co-ed rooming, she wouldn't do Crystal's, which was stupid, since the only point for the damned paper was so they could stay together. They'd lived together for years, for fuck's sake. It wasn't like anything would be different at school. But whatever. Cryssy's mom never did make any sense. [/div] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -• B E C A U S E Y O U S A Y S O •UNDER YOUR BREATH 412 WORDS | COMPLETE | TAGS: Crack!
