KEEP YOUR EYES WIDE OPEN
The library had been one of the first places she could call safe for her to linger in. It was open late, and early, and she found a plethora of books and magazines to keep her hungry mind going. It wasn't that she just ate up information, but it always gave her something to enjoy and look foreward to. Her father had told her long ago that the day you quit learning is the day you died. She refused to let that happen, (though it was highly unlikely at the age she was, unless it was a freak accident).... Freak. She didn't like that word. People usually meant it as a norm for something unexpected... But in the real world, she'd heard it used to describe her... Someone strange, and people didn't like her. Of course she didn't know why... she tried 99.9% of the time not to cause problems or put people in danger. The small swell of sadness had caused her to crinkle the edges of the magazine with her fingertips, leaving cracks and small nail gouges in the page corner. Gasping to herself, she struggled to straighten the page back, settled with a 90% fix up, and moved to replace the magazine before anyone could blame her.
She scanned the shelves for more books, her eyes rapidly flickering over titles, trying to decide if it was worth reading, or if she'd already read it. Sadly enough, she had indeed read many of the books on this particular shelf. Fantasy was one of her favorite genres... Probably because it provided a temporary escape. Once before, she'd plunged herself into the Lord of the Rings, she once believed she was Galadriel for a moment. She stopped at a shelf referenced as biblical. Long ago, when she found out about her ability, she had torn herself from all religious ties. Her parents were born Catholics, but she did not believe in someone that could make her a foreseen monster. No one at home even liked her. How could a God perceived to be as great as He, make something wrong like her and let her continue life?
Of course, she'd never actually read the Bible, or any other kind of religious text. Now her interest was piqued. Staring at the torn leather cover, the slightly gold print sticking out to her, she gave a look around before she reached up and snatched it from the shelf. Running her fingers curiously over the cover, she sighed. Did it make sense to seek him out, and ask why he'd made her this way? She wanted to believe in something, so that maybe she could live easier... even breathe easier. Tapping the cover lightly, she returned to one of the cushioned chairs in the corner, sinking down into the material. Pulling her knees up to her chest, she opened to the index, which listed chapters by people's names, she assumed. She remembered a quote from a movie, which she'd remembered being from the bible... What book had it been from?
Job.... She quickly flipped through the pages, and chapters, trying to find the book named Job. When she found it, she read quickly trying to locate a line about a horse... Finding it, she gave a soft sigh, and settled her finger where it began, her eyes tracing it through. "Do you give the horse it's strength, or clothe it's neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with it's proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in it's strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing. It does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against it's side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement, it eats up the ground. It cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds...." She paused at this bit, her eyes slightly wetter than before. Why in the hell did she want to cry when reading the bible? Shaking out the imagined sound of thundering horses feet, she smiled. Maybe this so called God was not so bad. Standing, she went back to the shelf she'd gotten it from, and replaced it. As she went to turn, however, she collided with someone she'd not expected to be there.
"Oh... my, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were there. It's my fault..." she began, starting to get up.
